Why Choose Spray Foam?

A poorly insulated home may experience heat loss in a varity of ways. The US Department of Energy estimates 40% of a home's heat loss is due to air leakage. This issue doesn't exist with spray foam because it expands to fit the space. Closed cell insulation eliminates air transfer because it is an air barrier. It also acts as a moisture barrier eliminating the need for an addition vapor barrier. Per inch, closed cell spray foam has the highest R-value of any type of insulation. It will last the life of the home and will not loose its effectiveness from settling or sagging like blow-in or bat insulation.

Reduce Costs & Increase Value

Using spray foam insulation is arguably one of the best investments you can make in your home. The U.S. Department of Energy estimates that 56% of the energy used in a home goes to heating and cooling. According to the Canadian Urethane Foam Contractors Association, HVAC sizing can be reduced by as much as 35% without any loss of effieciency or comfort in a spray-foamed house. You will save money every day on your heating and cooling bills. Moreover, the value of your home will not just be protected, but will increase because of your decision to use spray foam insulation.

Tax Credits and Rebates

Energystar.gov says, "Adding adequate insulation is one of the most cost-effective home improvements that you can do." There are tax credits, low cost loans, and grants available for home owners and the owners of small rental properties through both federal and state governments for energy conservation initiatives such as spray foam insulation. Rebates are often available through your local energy provider to offset the added cost of energy efficient construction. We can help you find the most beneficial programs currently available for your project.

Two Types of Foam

The Properties, Proformances and Costs

Closed Cell Spray Foam

Closed cell foam is the work horse of the two foam types. Also known as two pound (2 lb) foam, it functions as both an air barrier and a moisture barrier. Moreover, it adds structural strengh and provides the highest R-value per inch of any insulation.

Closed-cell, or medium-density foam, is a rigid insulating material with a Long Term Thermal Resistance (LTTR) R-value that ranges between 5.1 - 6.9 per inch.

Closed cell insulation can be purchased in rigid boards. However, sprayed or foamed-in-place applications of polyurethane insulation are typically less expensive and perform better because the liquid foam molds itself to all of the surfaces.

All closed-cell polyurethane foam insulation made today is produced with a non-HCFC (hydrochlorofluorocarbon) gas as the foaming agent.

Open Cell Spray Foam

Open-cell or low-density spray foam is also referred to as 1/2 pound (1/2 lb) foam. It uses air, typically CO2, as the foaming agent. Though it is not as effective an insulator as closed-cell foam, it still provides a thermal resistance value of R 3.6 per inch on average.

In new construction, open-cell foam is sprayed into open wall cavities where it will rapidly expand to fill the entire void. Open-cell foam remains flexible after curing so its contribution to structural strength is minimal.

Open cell foam makes a good sound barrier for interior wall. And is much more cost efftive than closed cell.

Because low-density foam fills the entire cavity, it provides an excellent air seal. Though it does not serve as a vapor barrier, it is resistant to the wicking of moisture but not impervious. It is also fire resistant and will not sustain a flame.

Added Structural Strengh

Spray-applied closed-cell polyurethane foam is the only insulation material that adds structural integrity throughout the wall system. Testing conducted by the National Association of Home Builders (NAHB) Research Center and the Canadian Construction Materials Centre shows spray-applied polyurethane foam insulation between wood and steel-stud wall panels increased rack and shear strength two to three times compared with standard insulated wall construction. Also, this product won't sag or settle over time it will truly last a lifetime.

No More Mold

Mold requires three things to grow: moisture, warm temperatures and a food source. Polyurethane foam insulation has no nutritional value and is not considered a food source for mold. The use of polyurethane as insulation eliminates condensing surfaces and reduces the potential to accumulate moisture. It also eliminates air movement within the wall cavity. Nearly eliminating the chance for mold to grow. In fact, closed cell spray foam insulation is the only material FEMA classifies as a class 5 flood-resistant insulation.

Better Indoor Air Quality

The application of spray foam insulation eleminates air movement with the outside envroment which can reduce your exposure to outdoor allergins, ordors and other pollutants. Cellulose is made of esstentally paper which can grow mold and can be dusty and harbor rodents. If it wasn't for the boric acid added to the cellulose the rodent would make a perminate home. Spray foam seals the spaces so well it will impede insects and other pests from enetering the home.
